Historically, distribution businesses have commonly applied static export limits of 5 kW or less for many solar customers. Victoria is also moving towards more flexible export arrangements that can allow households to export more when the local grid has capacity.

Why Are Export Limits Needed?

On mild, sunny days, thousands of Victorian homes can generate solar power at the same time. If electricity demand is low while solar exports are very high, the local grid can become difficult to manage.

For new Victorian rooftop solar systems up to 200 kW installed from 1 October 2024, emergency-backstop capability generally applies. This requires compatible equipment and, in most cases, a reliable internet connection so the system can communicate with the distribution business.

The good news is that this technology also supports flexible exports.

Instead of having one fixed export limit all the time, flexible exports can allow the amount you export to change depending on conditions in your local electricity network. That means you may be able to export more solar when the grid has capacity.

Does an Export Limit Mean You’re Losing Your Solar?

Not necessarily.

This is where using your solar energy wisely becomes important.

Instead of exporting all your excess electricity, you can use more of it at home.

For example, during sunny hours you could:

  1. Run your washing machine or dishwasher
  2. Heat your hot water
  3. Charge an electric vehicle
  4. Run your pool pump
  5. Charge your home battery

The Victorian Government specifically recommends using rooftop solar during daylight hours to make the most of your generated energy.

And there's another important point: using your own solar can be more valuable than exporting it, because you avoid buying electricity from the grid at retail rates.

What About Solar Batteries?

This is one reason battery storage is becoming increasingly interesting for Victorian households.

Instead of exporting excess solar immediately, a battery can store some of that energy for later.

You can use stored energy in the evening when your solar panels aren't generating.
