Solar panels can cut your daytime electricity use. A battery can help you use that solar power after the sun goes down. But in 2026, is adding a battery actually worth the investment?
For many Australian households, the answer could be yes. But it depends on how you use energy, your electricity plan, your solar system and the cost of the installation.
And there is one major reason batteries are getting more attention in 2026: the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
Solar Gives You Power. A Battery Helps You Keep It.
Solar panels generate the most electricity during the day. If you're not home or aren't using much electricity at that time, excess solar is generally exported to the grid.
The problem? You may then need to buy electricity from the grid in the evening when your solar panels aren't generating.
That's where a battery comes in.
A battery can store excess solar energy during the day and make it available later, helping increase your solar self-consumption and reduce the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the grid.

The example's solar + battery system cost $22,000 and saved approximately $2,100 per year, resulting in a simple payback of around 10.5 years. The Government notes that a battery may still provide other benefits, but it isn't automatically the best financial choice for every household.

A battery can increase your savings, but the extra upfront cost means you should look at the numbers for your home, not someone else's.
The 2026 Battery Advantage: Around 30% Off
Here's where 2026 becomes particularly interesting.
According to (Cheaper home batteries program | energy.Gov.au, 2025), since 1 July 2025, the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program has provided around a 30% discount on eligible small-scale battery systems connected to new or existing rooftop solar.
The discount is generally provided through participating solar and battery retailers and installers. So if you've been considering a battery, the incentive can significantly reduce the upfront cost of an eligible system. But remember, eligibility, battery capacity and other program requirements apply.
What About Solar Rebates in Victoria?
For eligible Victorian households, Solar Victoria currently offers a solar PV rebate of up to $1,400. Eligible households can also choose an interest-free loan matching the rebate amount. From 1 July 2026, the combined household income eligibility limit for the solar PV and hot-water rebates changed to $150,000 per year (Solar Victoria, 2026).
And don't forget STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates). Eligible new solar systems can also receive STC benefits, which can reduce the upfront purchase price (Solar Victoria, 2025).
Rebates and incentives have eligibility requirements and can change, so homeowners should always check the current program rules before making a decision.
Why Battery Storage Makes More Sense for Some Homes
A battery may be particularly useful if your household:
Uses lots of electricity in the evening - If your biggest energy use happens after the sun goes down, storing daytime solar can help.
Produces more solar than it uses during the day - Instead of exporting all your excess solar, some of it can be stored for later.
Has time-of-use electricity pricing - A battery can potentially help you avoid purchasing electricity during more expensive periods.
Wants greater energy independence - A suitably configured battery can provide backup power during an outage, although not every battery system automatically provides backup. The system needs to be designed and configured for this purpose.
And It's Not Just About Saving Money
Solar and battery storage can also help households use more renewable energy and reduce their reliance on grid electricity. Australia already has one of the world's highest rates of rooftop solar adoption, and battery storage is becoming an increasingly important part of Australia's energy system.
The Australian Government is expecting the Cheaper Home Batteries Program to support more than 2 million Australians installing batteries by 2030, with around 40 GWh of additional storage capacity expected. That's a pretty big shift.
So, Is Solar + Battery Worth It in 2026?
Solar? For many homes, it can be a strong long-term investment.
Battery? It depends.
If you already have solar, use a lot of electricity in the evening, and can access the current battery incentive, a battery may make considerably more sense than it did previously.
But the smartest approach isn't:
“What's the biggest system I can buy?”
It's:
“What system will actually work best for my home?”
