For example, a household that is already using most of its solar electricity during the day may get less additional value from a battery than a household that generates a lot of excess solar and uses most of its electricity after sunset.
That's why choosing a battery shouldn't simply be about buying the biggest battery available. It's about buying the right battery for your home.
What Makes 2026 Different?
The biggest change is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
Since 1 July 2025, eligible small-scale battery installations can receive a discount of around 30%, delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. The discount is generally applied through participating retailers and installers.
The program applies to eligible batteries connected to new or existing rooftop solar, meaning you don't necessarily need to install solar and a battery at the same time. That could make 2026 a particularly interesting year for homeowners who already have solar but haven't yet added storage.
But there's an important catch.
The discount isn't a simple “30% off any battery” offer. Eligibility requirements apply, and the value depends on factors including the eligible battery capacity and the applicable program rules. It's also important to choose compliant equipment. The Clean Energy Council maintains an approved battery list, and approved products are required for the federal battery incentive.
Who Should Consider a Solar Battery?
A battery could make particular sense if your household looks something like this:
✔ You use lots of electricity at night
If your family cooks dinner, runs appliances, heats or cools the home and uses hot water mainly after the sun has gone down, storing daytime solar could help you use more of your own energy.
✔ You regularly export excess solar
If your solar system produces more electricity than your home needs during the day, a battery gives you another option: store some of that energy instead of exporting it immediately.
✔ You have time-of-use electricity pricing
Depending on your electricity plan, using stored solar energy during expensive periods may help reduce your grid purchases.

Australia Is Moving Towards More Battery Storage
This isn't just a small trend. Australia experienced a huge increase in household battery installations during 2025.
The Clean Energy Council reported that 183,245 home batteries were sold in Australia during the second half of 2025 alone, more than the previous four years combined (Clean Energy Council, 2025).
Its 2026 Clean Energy Australia report also found that more than 268,000 home batteries were installed during 2025, representing a 260% increase year-on-year (Clean Energy Council, 2026).

A battery could be worth considering if:
